Kentucky Railroad Crossing Accidents

A 21 year-old Kentucky man was kit and killed by a CSX train as he walked near the tracks while wearing and iPod. The accident happened near a railroad crossing in Williamsburg. The man, identified as Steven Gabriel Dizney, lived less than 200 yards from the tracks. He had left his home along North 6th Street to walk to the video store and library in downtown Williamsburg.

The accident occurred at about 5:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 17, 2011. Dizney was declared dead at the scene by Whitley County Deputy Coroner Jerry Croley. It is believed he was listening to music and did not hear the train. The iPod was still on when it was found near the tracks by investigators. The downtown Williamsburg railroad crossing was closed until about 11 p.m. while officials began their investigation.

“The victim was wearing an iPod with headphones and, according to the train conductor, Dizney walked onto CSX property and stepped directly into the path of the southbound train,” said Williamsburg Police Chief Wayne Bird in a press release.

The CSX train was equipped with a video camera that recorded the accident. The video footage taken by CSX also will be reviewed by investigators.

It is believed that the death was an accident.

“That’s what we’re investigating it as of now. As an accident but we’re still going over other details. We’ll know more when we receive the tape from the CSX railroad,” said Chief Deputy Coroner Croley.
