Arkansas Railroad Crossing Accidents

A garbage truck driver is dead after being hit by a Union Pacific train at a railroad crossing near Hope, AR. Arkansas State Police say the accident happened shortly after 1:00 P.M. on Thursday. The crash happened East of the Hope airport near the intersection of U.S. Highway 278 and Arkansas Highway 32.

Railroad workers at the scene of the accident said that the crew of the northbound Union Pacific train was switching out engines used to move rail cars when it hit the trash truck. The accident report states that the westbound garbage truck collided with the right side of the train engine. The accident is reported to have knocked the train engine off the railroad tracks.

It is unclear whether the truck driver was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash. Rescue workers had to cut him out of the cab of his garbage truck before being airlifted to a Hope hospital where he died about two hours later. One railroad worker suffered a minor injury. No other injuries were reported.
