A CSX train hit and kill a pedestrian in Scottsville, VA earlier this week. It was the fourth railroad-related death this year in Virginia according to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
Albermarle County Police are conducting and Investigation into the facts and cause of the pedestrian and train collision. It has been reported that the pedestrian was hit by an eastbound CSX train carrying a full load of grain at approximately 2:00 AM. The victim was lying on the tracks as the train approached, according to investigators. The train conductor slammed on the brakes in a failed attempt to avoid hitting the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead later in the morning.
Witnesses reported, but police have not confirmed, that that person killed in the train accident was in possession of a wine bottle.
Police have confirmed, however, that the conductor saw the person on the railroad tracks before the crash. They also noted that regardless of how fast a train is going, it takes a long distance for a train to stop because of its size. The train finally did stop a few seconds after the deadly accident.
The railway was closed temporarily after the accident for the scene of the railroad death to be processed by investigators. A main concern was that all warning and safety devices were operating properly before the railway was reopened.
Police were unable to identify the dead body at the scene. The body was sent to the medical examiner for identification by DNA or dental records.
