Amtrak train derailment in Philadelphia injures 50

An Amtrak train has derailed and crashed this evening near Philadelphia, PA. Initial reports are that at least 50 of the 240 passengers and five crew members onboard have suffered injuries of varying severity. The train, Amtrak train 188, was headed toward New York City from Washington D.C. when the derailment occurred. It was scheduled to arrive in New York at 10:30 P.M.. The accident happened approximately 9:20 P.M..

On its Twitter account, Amtrak said that it was “aware of the derailment of train 188 north of Philadelphia and will provide updates as they become available.”

An emergency response staging area has been set up at the near the intersection of Castor and Frankfort streets. It is estimated that 8-10 cars left the railroad tracks. Several cars are on their sides. Police at the scene of the crash have asked bystanders to stay away from the train. Authorities are encouraging people in the area to avoid the derailment site completely.

A team of investigators from the Federal Railroad Association (FRA) has been sent to the crash site.
