Train hits RV at Indiana railroad crossing, man injured

A 71-year-old Indiana man was critically injured when his motor home was hit by a train at at a railroad crossing near Indianapolis at approximately 6:30 P.M. on Tuesday evening. The RV was stopped on the railroad tracks when the train crashed into the driver’s side of the vehicle. There were no passengers in the RV at the time of the accident and no one on the train was injured.

The train pushed the recreational vehicle about three blocks down the railroad tracks. The RV finally came to a stop about four blocks past the scene of the crash.

The elderly driver of the RV told of the police that he didn’t see the oncoming eastbound CSX train before it crashed into his vehicle. He was thrown from the vehicle on impact and found about 50 feet from the road in critical condition. The man was rushed to Methodist Hospital in Brownsburg, IN and is expected to survive the injuries suffered in the crash.

It was not reported whether the railroad crossing had proper warning devices, such as crossbuck warning signs, flashing lights, bells and/or whistles, and working gates.
