Abilene, Texas — A truck that the became stuck in ice while crossing railroad tracks in Abilene, TX was hit by a train Thursday morning. A car stuck in the ice behind the truck was not involved in the collision. The Union Pacific train was stopped for several hours after the crash while the train and tracks were inspected.
The driver of the truck, Oscar Olvedo, was able to escape his vehicle when he heard warning bells ringing and saw the train coming. “I wanted to get the truck out of the way,” he said to a KTXS News reporter, “but it’s not worth my life, so I just decided to just leave it.” Mr. Olvedo not injured in the accident.
Several vehicles had become stuck at the railroad crossing since ice began covering the streets of Abilene on Monday night. Police ask people not to drive for anything other than essential business until the roads have been cleared of ice and snow.
