A train and vehicle crash near Dexter, Missouri, killed four people, including two children.

The accident happed around 1:30 p.m. Friday, September 2, about two miles south of Dexter on County Road 732.

A car driven by Maura N. Peters, 19, of Dexter was heading westbound when it crossed the path of a Union Pacific train heading southbound. The train was operated by Robert E. Bajorek of Little Rock, Arkansas. The train came to rest about a quarter mile from the impact.

The Stoddard County coroner pronounced Peters, and the passengers Weston L. Crider, age 1, and Hailey E. Laws, 20, of Bloomfield, Missouri dead at the scene. An infant third passenger, Bryson M. Umfleet of Dexter, was pronounced dead at Twin Rivers Medical Center in Kennett, Missouri.

A Vidalia L. Mace of Bloomfield was reportedly in serious injury and airlifted to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau for treatment. As of Friday, she was listed in stable condition.

The train intersection is marked with crossbuck warning signs only, according to a Missouri State Highway Patrol’s report.
