Springfield, IL — A 68 year-old man was killed in a railroad crossing accident when the car he was driving was hit by a Union Pacific train on Monday afternoon at about 4:30 P.M.. The man was crossing the railroad tracks at Hambuch Road in Auburn, South of Springfield, IL. After the initial impact, the train pushed the car several hundred feet. The train’s crew reported the crash to authorities. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cross-arms, warning lights and bells at the railroad crossing were working properly, according to the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office. The cause of the crash continues to be under investigation.
